FAQ's - GDU Calibration

every 6 months Most fixed GDUs should be calibrated every 6 months. In harsher or higher-risk environments, quarterly calibration may be required to stay compliant and ensure accuracy.
Remember, you need to calibrate your gas detector regularly because sensors can drift over time and poisons and inhibitors can affect gas readings.
Typically, GDUs can detect gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), oxygen (O2) levels, methane (CH4), and other flammable gases. However, the specific gases a unit can detect depend on its design and the sensors it has.
A common standard to pass a bump test is the instrument must detect 50% of the calibration gas concentration exposed to the gas detector. In these examples, the gas monitor would be required to detect 50ppm of CO and 17.5ppm of H2S. Only after 34 months of gradual sensor drift the instruments would fail a bump test.
Electrochemical sensors tend to drift over time and require bump testing every 3 to 6 months. Calibration is recommended annually or if bump testing indicates an out of spec sensor. Due to the technology of electrochemical sensors, they will deplete over time and more rapidly if exposed to the target gas.
The calibration frequency should be determined by the level of risk. A high risk situation will require a higher frequency of calibration in comparison to a low risk situation. Best practice is to test the gas monitor with a known concentration of gas before each use (bump test/challenge test).
The expiration date of calibration gas is listed on every Industrial Scientific calibration gas bottle. This date is based on the calibration gas shelf life. The concentration of gases in a cylinder may change over time due to the gas reacting to moisture, oxygen, or other chemicals.
approximately two to five years Typically, most gas detectors have a lifespan of approximately two to five years. However, this lifespan can vary based on the specific model, usage conditions, and maintenance practices. Some high-quality gas detectors can last even longer with proper care and regular servicing.
WatchGas recommends calibrating gas monitors the first time they are used and then at regular intervals not to exceed 6 months, depending on use and exposure to particulates, contaminants and sensor poisons. A daily bump test should be performed to ensure a functional response of all sensors and alarms.
Yes, you can send your Gas Detection Unit (GDU) to be calibrated in the UK. Several companies offer calibration and service for GDUs. You can either send your unit to their service center or, in some cases, have a site visit for servicing and calibration.
