A Display Screen Equipment (DSE) assessment, also known as a workstation or ergonomic assessment, is a comprehensive evaluation of a workspace where display screens are used. It aims to identify potential risks associated with the use of DSE and recommend adjustments to mitigate those risks, ensuring a safe and healthy work environment
every 12 months How often should you complete a DSE assessment? Display screen equipment (DSE) assessment training should be carried out by new employees and a refresher completed by all employees at least every 12 months, or if there are any changes to desk set up.
Overview. As an employer, you must protect your workers from the health risks of working with display screen equipment (DSE), such as PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones.
Take short breaks often, rather than longer ones less often. For example 5 to 10 minutes every hour is better than 20 minutes every 2 hours. Ideally, users should be able to choose when to take breaks.
Workstations and assessment If workers use display screen equipment (DSE) daily, as part of their normal work, continuously for an hour or more, employers must do a workstation assessment. Employers should look at: the whole workstation, including equipment, furniture, and work conditions. the job being done.
What are an employee's DSE related responsibilities? Employees have a responsibility to care for their own health and safety at work (including when they are working from home). They must also ensure that they don't do anything to put others' health and safety at risk.
The employers are responsible for DSE assessments. If employees use DSE daily as part of their normal work, it is the employer's responsibility to arrange a DSE assessment. It is also the employer's responsibility to plan regular breaks for all employees to reduce the risk of tiredness and eye strain.

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations apply to workers who use DSE daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more.
