FAQ's - Scaffolding Inspection

Scaffolds must be inspected before they are used and confirmed in the initial inspection report or in a handover certificate. Scaffolds must be inspected every 7 days. Scaffolds must be inspected following events which could affect the safety of the structure, e.g. alterations, adverse weather or an earthquake.
While scaffold contractors will attempt to inspect their own work, this practice can introduce conflicts of interest. To ensure impartial and thorough inspections, many experts recommend using third-party inspectors.
Only a “competent person” can inspect scaffolds, as defined by OSHA (OSHA standard §1926.450(b) ). This individual must be able to identify and predict hazards in the work environment and be authorized to take corrective action.
How often should a scaffold be inspected? A scaffold used for construction should be inspected before it is used for the first time and then every 7 days, until it is removed.
The competent person The competent person is responsible for inspecting scaffolding before each work shift and after any event that could affect its structural integrity, such as high winds or heavy rains. This includes reviewing all scaffold components and verifying that the setup complies with OSHA regulations.
OSHA requires the general contractor in section 1926.451(f)(3) to have scaffolds and scaffold components inspected for visible defects by a competent person prior to each work shift and after any occurrence which could affect a scaffold's structural integrity.
CISRS Basic Scaffold Inspection is aimed at persons responsible for inspecting and checking basic scaffolds for safe use, and for signing certificates and registers in accordance with statutory regulations.
Every scaffold inspection must be recorded on a scaffold inspection tag, which the CP attaches before use. The tag should include the CP's name, signature, inspection dates, and be visible, legible, and durable.
It is the scaffold users/hirers responsibility to ensure that all scaffolding has been inspected as follows: following installation/before first use. at an interval of no more than every 7 days thereafter. following any circumstances liable to jeopardise the safety of the installation eg high winds.
Inspections—Before each work shift and after any occurrence that could affect the structural integrity, a competent person must inspect the scaffold and scaffold components for visible defects.
