BRC stands for British Retail Consortium. In 2003 this professional association of distributors set a specific standard for better food safety and the control of food products.
The BRCGS global standard for food safety is one of the operational tools most frequently used worldwide for due diligence and supplier approval. First developed in 1998 by the British Retail consortium the standard is regularly improved, involving international stakeholders in the supply chain.
The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety was the first Standard to be benchmarked by the GFSI. ISO 22000 is not a GFSI-benchmarked Standard as it could not meet the specific requirements of the GFSI Guidance Document. FSSC 22000 is a GFSI-benchmarked Standard.
The British Retail Consortium Global Standards (BRCGS) Food Safety standard provides a framework for food manufacturers to achieve the highest levels of safety, covering a wide range of areas including HACCP, traceability and quality management systems.
While both HACCP and BRC certifications aim to enhance food safety, they have distinct focuses: Scope: HACCP is a preventive system applicable across various food sectors, while BRC is a comprehensive standard primarily aimed at food manufacturers and suppliers.
The BRC verifies that the foreign exchange earned through exports has been duly received and recorded, which is essential for regulatory oversight.
AA The grading scale for BRCGS audits goes from AA as the highest to Uncertified in the order: AA, A, B, C, D, Uncertified.
Global Food Safety Snapshot The choice between FSSC 22000 vs BRCGS is influenced by markets as much as by science. European merchants commonly incorporate the BRCGS into their supply agreements, whereas multinational manufacturers tend to prefer the systems-thinking approach of FSSC 22000.
The main goal of ISO 9001 is to ensure that businesses deliver consistent quality to their customers by having well-defined and regularly reviewed processes. On the other hand, BRC, especially the BRC Food Certification, has a narrower focus, primarily targeting food safety.
Certification to BRCGS global standard for food safety by an independent third-party is a requirement of most retailers and brand owners, as well as food processors.
