The UKEX certification scheme, which replaces the ATEX certification, was implemented on January 1, 2022. This new scheme applies to intrinsically safe equipment for use in hazardous areas in the UK after the country's withdrawal from the European Union.

An ATEX certificate does not have an expiry date that requires a product to be re-certified. However, changes in the design of the product and updates to the relevant ATEX harmonised standards can require that product certificates need to be updated.
