FAQ's - COSHH Assessments

A COSHH assessment is a type of risk assessment that focuses on the hazards and risks associated with hazardous substances in the workplace. It's a legal requirement under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) and aims to protect employees from harm caused by substances that could be harmful if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin
There are 5 steps to a COSHH assessment: •Collect information on the substances you use and your work practices. •Evaluate the health risks. •Select appropriate control measures to reduce or eliminate the risks. •Record your findings and implement your control measures. •Monitor performance and review your assessment.
It is at your discretion to decide when a review is deemed necessary, but risk assessments are a working document and, as your business experiences change, this information should be recorded and updated. As a guide, it is recommended that risk assessments be reviewed on an annual basis.
You don't need any particular qualifications but you must be competent. This means you must have the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to do the job properly. You should: understand hazard and risk.
The COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations primarily focus on assessing, preventing, and controlling workplace exposure to hazardous substances. These regulations don't break down into three distinct "regulations", but rather outline a series of steps and principles for managing these risks. The core of COSHH involves identifying hazardous substances, assessing the risks they pose, implementing control measures to prevent or minimize exposure, and ensuring these controls are effective and maintained
For example, under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations, health records must be kept for at least 40 years from the date of the last entry. RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences) records must be kept for at least 3 years after the last incident.
When it comes to CoSHH, both employees and employers have responsibilities to ensure a safe working environment for everyone! As most people know, CoSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. CoSHH aims to provide knowledge on how to correctly handle hazardous substances in the workplace.
The manufacturer or supplier of a hazardous substance must provide an SDS when you purchase the product. If a chemical is classified as hazardous under UK REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), it must have an SDS.
All employers must carry out a risk assessment and those employing five or more employees must also record significant findings. This record needs to be accessible so that safety representatives, inspectors, etc. can examine it.
To get a COSHH certificate, you need to complete a COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) awareness course and pass the associated assessment. These courses are available online and through various training providers, often including a multiple-choice test. Successful completion leads to a certificate, which can be printed or downloaded as proof of completion
